Who Stole the Tarts?

In the great courtroom the King and Queen of Hearts sat upon their thrones. Before them stood the Knave of Hearts, accused of stealing the tarts, and on a table nearby lay the tarts themselves.

Twelve animals crowded into the jury-box, scribbling busily on slates.

The first witness was the Hatter, who arrived still holding his teacup and trembled so much that he could hardly speak. The cook came next, and her pepper set everyone sneezing.
