One Pink Candle

In the afternoon, Maya's friends arrived. The table was set with the pretty dishes.

They had thin bread and butter, hot chocolate with swirls of cream, and a cake with pink and white frosting.

One pink candle stood in the middle.

"Our brand-new year is only one day old," said Maya's mother. "One candle is just right."
